The rules for registering a sender ID on DLT in 2026: length and character rules, the category digit on promotional headers, what registrars refuse, how headers appear on a phone, and how to check who owns one.
An SMS header is the six-character sender ID a business registers on a DLT platform, such as AVNZON. Transactional and service headers use letters (or letters and digits) with no spaces or symbols. Promotional headers have traditionally been six digits whose first digit shows the business category. You register headers after your entity is approved, there is no separate fee, and a registrar checks that each header belongs to your business. A header left unused for 90 days can be withdrawn.
| Rule | Transactional / service | Promotional |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 6 characters | 6 characters |
| Characters | Letters, or letters and digits | Traditionally 6 digits; first digit = category |
| Spaces / symbols | Not allowed | Not allowed |
| Case | Vi treats headers as case-sensitive; most senders use capitals | n/a |
| Fee | None listed per header; covered by the entity registration | |
| How many | No limit stated on Vi; register one per brand or purpose | |
| Transfer | Not transferable to another entity; can be surrendered | |
Vi's header registration manual ties the first digit of a numeric promotional header to the customer-preference category, the same categories people choose when they set DND preferences:
| First digit | Category | Example header |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Banking, insurance, financial products | 1xxxxx |
| 2 | Real estate | 2xxxxx |
| 3 | Education | 3xxxxx |
| 4 | Health | 4xxxxx |
| 5 | Consumer goods and automobiles | 5xxxxx |
| 6 | Communication, broadcasting, entertainment, IT | 6xxxxx |
| 7 | Tourism and leisure | 7xxxxx |
| 8 | Food and beverages | 8xxxxx |
| 0 | Others | 0xxxxx |
Letter headers for promotions. Vi's manual also describes an "OTHER" header type, six case-sensitive letters or digits, usable for transactional, service and promotional traffic. SMS providers report that since March 2026, after service-explicit templates were moved into the promotional category, promotional messages can go out on letter headers. We have not found a TRAI document confirming the date, so check with your operator portal before you plan around it.
The registrar's question is simple: would a customer reading this header recognise your business? Headers that pass usually come straight from the name on your PAN or GST certificate:
| Business name | Likely approved | Likely refused |
|---|---|---|
| AvanceZone Technology | AVNZON, AVZONE | SMSOTP (generic) |
| Sri Murugan Textiles, Erode | SMTEXT, MURUGN | TEXTIL (generic word) |
| Kovai Dental Care | KOVDNT | DENTAL (generic), APOLLO (another brand) |
| Green Valley Matric School | GVMSCH | SCHOOL (generic) |
Register separate headers for separate purposes if it helps your customers, for example one for OTPs and one for order updates, but it is not required. One header can serve several templates.
Recipients don't see the bare six characters. They see a prefix, the header and, since May 2025 according to SMS providers, a category suffix:
VM-AVNZON-S service message via an operator/circle coded "VM"
JM-AVNZON-T transactional (e.g. an OTP)
AD-AVNZON-P promotional
XY-ABCDEF-G governmentThe prefix depends on the operator and circle that carried the message, so the same header can appear with different prefixes. Your application only ever sends the six-character header; operators add the rest. The suffix is useful for customers, who can now see at a glance whether a message is a promotion.
Portal-specific screens are covered in our guides to Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL.
TRAI's SMS Header Information portal lets anyone look up which registered entity a header belongs to. It is the quickest way to check whether a message claiming to be from your bank or a delivery company is genuine. BSNL and Vi also publish daily PDF lists of registered headers on their DLT portals.
For senders it is a useful pre-check too: if the header you want is already registered to someone else, choose another before you submit.
Sending from code? The header goes in the sender_id field of the API call. See our PHP or Python guides, and DLT error codes for header-template mismatches. For which route each message belongs on, read transactional vs promotional SMS.
We suggest headers that pass, file them with the right proof and set up your bulk SMS account to send on them.
