What is DLT and why is it required?
To curb spam and protect consumers, TRAI requires all businesses (Principal Entities) to register on a DLT platform operated by telecom operators. Once registered, you register your sender IDs (headers) and message templates. Only approved headers and templates can be delivered — which is why unregistered SMS simply fails.
Step 1 — Register your entity
Choose any operator's DLT portal (Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL — registration is shared across all). You'll need your business PAN, GST (if applicable), authorised signatory details and a Letter of Authorisation. You receive a unique Entity ID once approved, usually within a few working days.
Step 2 — Register your Header (Sender ID)
A header is the 6-character sender ID recipients see (e.g. AVNZON). You register separate headers for transactional, service and promotional traffic. Pick a header that clearly represents your brand.
Step 3 — Register your Templates
Every message must match a pre-approved template. Variable parts (like OTP, name, amount) are marked with placeholders such as {#var#}. Templates are tied to a category and header. Approval is typically quick for clean, compliant content.
Step 4 — Go live with a registered SMS gateway
Once your entity, headers and templates are approved, your SMS provider maps them to your account and you can start sending. A good provider validates your templates and routing so deliveries don't fail on technicalities.
